#Do1Thing opinion

  • Belfast City Council and Queen’s University have launched the Belfast Climate Commission – it is one of only three city-based climate commissions in the UK (Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds)
  • The Commission will play a key role in place-based climate action necessary to achieve the UK Government’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050
  • As part of our decarbonisation plans, Council is committed to looking at the energy efficiency of existing buildings; decarbonisation of new build properties/projects; and decarbonisation across Council’s fleet
  • The fleet strategy will look at the future direction of Council’s fleet in terms of type and number of vehicles, and it includes medium and long-term ambitions for transition to low carbon options
  • We are currently piloting 12 electric vehicles which will be used by our parks team
  • Five of our car parks have fast public charge points. Each charge point has two connections, enabling two vehicles to be charged at once
  • Our car parking strategy also aims to support Council’s green agenda around air quality and climate change by encouraging more sustainable commuter travel – public transport, cycling, walking
  • In total, 16 individual programmes of work have been identified to address climate change and its impact.
