Knockbreda Primary School has been taking part in the Belfast City Council One Million Trees project

South Belfast school children have planted over 550 trees in an effort to boost local wildlife and the environment.

Knockbreda Primary School pupils have been taking part in the Belfast City Council One Million Trees project and have planted hundreds of trees around their school grounds on Tuesday morning.

Every year group in the school has been involved in planting the trees, with them being supported by the Belfast Hills Partnership who explained to the youngsters the importance of the new trees and the species that they were planting.

Aodhan O'Kane of Belfast Hills Partnership said: "We are delighted to have been invited here to Knockbreda Primary School so that we are able to help the children take part in the One Million Trees project.

"The aim is to help them understand the importance of their local environment and wildlife and encourage them to look after it well into the future.

"The trees we are planting this morning are all native species to the island of Ireland and it will be great for the children to see them growing over the next few years."

Knockbreda Primary School principal Natalie Sayers said that learning about the environment is a key focus of theirs with dedicated forest school classes that have been very popular among the pupils.

She said: "At Knockbreda all of our pupils enjoy taking part in our Forest and Eco-school classes where we learn about the importance of looking after our local environment and wildlife and how we are responsible for looking after it.

"In our area we are lucky to be surrounded by lots of wildlife and the children enjoy seeing the squirrels who visit our grounds, along with the robins and collared doves.

"This morning has been a great experience for our pupils who were all very eager to get involved and ask questions and I hope that this will give them further encouragement to look after the environment and the world around them."
