Six 'danger to life' flood warnings are in place today with some parts of the UK bracing for a months worth of rain fall in 24 hours.

Forecasters are warning that the weather will remain unsettled in the aftermath of Storm Dennis as communities near the Welsh border prepare for further flooding.

Persistent rain has seen the Met Office place yellow weather warnings for rain across parts of southern Scotland and Strathclyde, northwestern England and Wales.

England has already seen 141 per cent of its average February rainfall so far this month, according to the Environment Agency.

River levels in the Colne, Ribble, Calder, Aire, Trent, Severn, Wye, Lugg, and Derwent all set new records as Storm Dennis hit in recent days.

There are 106 food warnings in place across the UK today, as well as 163 flood alerts.

Six of the flood warnings along the River Lugg, Severn and Wye are 'severe' meaning that residents are being urged to follow the advice of emergency services and leave their homes if necessary.

Craig Snell, meteorologist at the Met Office said: "In the worst case scenario we could see a month's worth of rain."

He warned that although some rivers would be able to cope with around 50-60mm of rainfall, the already saturated ground could cause major problems.

Areas of north Wales and the north west could see up to 100mm of rainfall during Thursday and into Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said: "The rain is particularly affecting northwestern parts of the UK, where some of the rain is quite heavy and many areas will see rain overnight and into tomorrow.

"Gradually through tomorrow the rain will clear its way away from the UK, but before that happens we're talking about quite a bit more rain in places.

"There will be some heavy winds and then something a bit brighter but colder with some showers around."

Despite reports of an incoming 'Storm Ellen', the Met Office has said that a named storm is not expected.

Dave Throup, the Environment Agency manager for Herefordshire and Worcestershire, described the recent flooding from Storm Dennis as "uncharted territory".

"Large parts of my home town and village are underwater tonight. This is not normal flooding," he said on Monday.

Taking to Twitter again last night, he added: "What I’ve seen over the last few days isn’t normal. It isn’t even the new normal. It’s going to get worse. We need to adapt and respond. And fast."

The EA said its teams put up more than 6km of temporary flood barriers across the country in preparation for the storm and that flood defences have protected nearly 25,000 properties.
