A community in West Belfast has been received a funding boost to tackle eyesores in their area.

This funding for the Upper Springfield area was secured from Co-operation Ireland through a collaborative effort from the Turf Lodge Residents' Association, Springhill Residents' Association, Gort na Móna GAA club and Newhill Youth and Community Assoication.

The funding has allowed the groups to buy equipment including power washers, leaf blowers and strimmers.

Micheal Donnelly, a community worker and Sinn Fein Councillor in the area, told Belfast Live that it was a "positive community spirit news story".

He said: "It's great to see that they were able to buy so much equipment and it's about empowering communities to get involved in community clean-ups and helping our older and vulnerable people in the community.

"We're looking forward to getting out there, getting our hands dirty and getting things cleaned up and helping people.

"This is the true face of our community, people wanting to give up their free time to go out and help their neighbours.

"A lot of the times we hear the negative news stories in our community but this shows you.

"The local GAA infrastructure, the youth clubs in the community - they want to go out and help their neighbours, they want to help the most vulnerable and elderly by taking part in these initiatives."
